Vision
By 2020, the Department of Forestry will be a fully-fledged professional department. Through the department efforts the country will be more green. There will be enough and readily accessible fuel-wood, jobs created, poverty alleviated and income generation improved.

Mission

The department is committed to putting 2% of total land area under production and protection forests, while also promoting management of indigenous forests in an attempt to ensure energy security, income generation as a means of economic growth and investment contributing to improvement of livelihood and environmental protection in partnership with relevant stakeholders.


Purpose

To increase the contribution made by trees to livelihood security and environmental protection.

Overall objectives

  • To increase the area of land under cover(exotic and indigenous trees) established and owned by local people either individually or communally including business sector.
  • To sensitize and educate the public on values and benefits of   trees and forests.
  • To update the national forest resources data base in order to assess the department progress towards achieving its goal and  also for submission to the global forest resources data base.
  • To promote the use of trees in support of conservation and production of both arable agriculture and rangelands and in particular the use of trees and other woody shrubs to ensure soil conservation and improvement of catchment areas.
  • To undertake and foster appropriate research in all aspects of forestry, including indigenous vegetation, to maximize the benefits of forestry, and to document, publish and disseminate research findings.
  • To encourage bee-keeping and bee-keeping industry by individuals and interest groups in order to facilitate efficient cross pollination and ensure adequate supply of honey.
